Last night gale force winds exceeded speeds of 119 km/hr which is classified as a hurricane hit the Helderberg Basin. Blowing over many trees and causing major storm damage especially in the informal settlements. Some houses had their roofs blown off and in another incident a tree fell on a home in The Strand killing a child whilst asleep.
At around 5:30 am the Helderberg Basin was awoken by the tremendous sound of thunder and lightning. This is very unusual for this area, apparently the last recorded storm of this magnitude happened in the early 80's.
