Helderberg Chamber Breakfast

The South African Energy Crisis - Breakfast Symposium

The Helderberg Chapter of the Cape Chamber of Commerce once again brings to the business community a topic of vital importance that is and will significantly affect all our lives for generations to come.

The program will commence with a short presentation by Lisa Parkes, Marketing Manager, The Green Building Council of South Africa whose mission is to promote, encourage and facilitate green building in South Africa. This presentation will explain the framework and rating tools for these environmental initiatives.
· The Green Building Council
o The Green Star SA rating tools that provide an objective framework and standards for the measurement of green building.
o They also establish a common language for the industry around green building issues and importantly, recognise environmental leadership.
o Rating tools have been instrumental in marking the mainstream take-up of green building practices in a number of markets worldwide, and South Africa is following this trend.

The key note presenter is Alan Brent, Professor of Sustainable Development in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, Stellenbosch University and Associate Director of the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies, Faculty of Engineering, University of Stellenbosch. He will be sharing his views with us on the following issues:

· The state of the Energy Crisis in SA
· The role of the private sector in the emerging “Green Economy”
· Alternate Energy Sources
· Solar Energy Technology Roadmap (SETRM)
o The current status of the technological developments of the different concentrated
solar thermal systems
o Discuss the international trends and drivers for these systems to generate electricity and process heat for the purposes of industrial applications
o Focus on the specific potential in the South African context.
· A number of barriers will be discussed to realise the potential and recommendations will be made accordingly to stimulate the growth of this industry sector in South Africa.

All businesses within the renewable energy industry are encouraged to bring along promotional brochures or pamphlets for display at the venue.
