Metro Police Clamp Down on Crime in The Helderberg Basin

Metro Police confiscate illegal gambling machines in Somerset West

Metro Police officers confiscated 18 illegal gambling machines and arrested one suspect during a joint operation with officials from the Western Cape Gambling Board in Somerset West on Friday 01 October.

The officers were following up on information they had received earlier, suggesting that the owner of the Wild West Pub in Church Street was operating illegal gambling machines in addition to the five licensed machines on the premises.

“This is our first joint operation with the Western Cape Gambling Board in Somerset West, and it will certainly not be the last in the broader Cape Town area,” said Metro Police Deputy Chief, Yolanda Faro.

On Saturday 02 October Metro Police officers worked with their colleagues in Traffic Services to conduct operations in Khayelitsha and Mfuleni. A total of 28 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Earlier that day, officers arrested one suspect in Kraaifontein for possession of narcotics after confiscating one whole Mandrax tablet, seven half-Mandrax tablets, and one packet of TIK.

Metro Police officers also conducted visible patrols in Sea Point and central Cape Town, which led to the arrest of one male suspect for theft after three concrete slabs belonging to the City of Cape Town were found in his possession. Officers also issued 41 traffic fines during these patrols.
