Historical Cape Shipwrecks Destroyed for Scrap Metal

isHistorical Cape Shipwrecks Destroyed for Scrap Metal

The Shonenberg Shipwreck, was wrecked a few hundred years ago and the survivors found their way to Somerset West where they stayed for a short while on the farm Vergelegen. There are rumours that the crew buried treasure on the farm, before making their way to Cape Town.

I read an article in today's Cape Times that the cannons were stolen just over three years for scrap metal!

It is a great concern that these historical shipwrecks are been destroyed for scrap metal. There are many historical shipwrecks between the Helderberg and Cape Agulas like Die Schonberg, St Mungo, Die Brederode, Mossa Senhora dos Milagros, Crentoo, Juno, Die Martha, Micobar and The Arniston.

To see more about the Shonberg Shipwreck see the articles on the History of the Helderberg...If you have any information on the condition of our shipwrecks along our coast please send us your stories...
