Metro Police arrest 40 suspects, issue 489 traffic fines during weekend operations


During weekend operations, City of Cape Town Metro Police officers arrested 22 suspects for driving under the influence of alcohol, 16 suspects for possession of illegal narcotics and two suspects for contravening the Public Nuisance By-Law.

On Friday evening, 26 August 2011, officers arrested three drunk drivers at a roadblock in Sea Point. Later that evening, officers arrested another four motorists for the same offence in Belhar and Woodstock.

In Durbanville, two suspects were arrested for possession of illegal narcotics after they were found with Mandrax tablets. During a joint operation with the South African Police Services (SAPS), another three were arrested in Bonteheuwel and Goodwood for possession of illegal narcotics after they were found with dagga.

In Somerset West, Metro Police officers worked with the SAPS to execute search warrants at suspected drug dens in Garden Village. Five suspects were arrested for possession of illegal narcotics.

On Saturday, 27 August 2011, two suspects were arrested in Table View for contravening the City’s Public Nuisance By-law during a joint operation with the SAPS.

The Metro Police Dog Unit carried out drug raids in Macassar on Sunday morning, 28 August 2011, resulting in the arrest of four suspects who were found with dagga.

During roadblocks later that day, officers arrested 10 motorists in Muizenberg and another five in Lwandle – all on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Officers arrested another two suspects in Macassar that evening for possession of illegal narcotics, after executing search warrants at suspected drug houses.

The following items were confiscated during weekend operations:

     42 dagga ‘stoppe’
     17 packets of TIK
     12 Mandrax tablets
     R1715,00 in cash

During various roadblocks and operations in Sea Point, Woodstock, Durbanville, Table View, Kraaifontein and Goodwood, officers issued 489 traffic fines and recorded six by-law offences.

“Our ongoing clamp down on drug dealers is yielding successes. We want to send a strong message to these perpetrators: our operations are not limited to weekends and can be conducted at any time,” said Metro Police Deputy Chief, Yolanda Faro.
