Cape Town - A man died in Macassar near Strand and Somerset West when he swerved to avoid a dog in the road, Western Cape paramedics said on Monday.

"[The bakkie] rolled through the fence of the primary school and landed on its wheels in the school yard," ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said.

She said paramedics tried to resuscitate the man when they arrived at the scene on Sunday evening, but the driver had no pulse.

"His condition did not change and he was later declared dead."

One of the two women travelling with him sustained extensive injuries.

She was transported to Tygerberg Hospital.

The second woman suffered moderate injuries and was stabilised and taken to Hottentots Holland Hospital in Somerset West.

"It was later noted that the bakkie, despite efforts to avoid the dog, hit into it anyway, and the dog died at the scene," Jackson said.
