Cape Town - A Cape Winelands couple have warned people to take extra care when arriving home at night - after a nightmare ordeal at the weekend.
The couple have asked not to be named, but wanted to warn Capetonians by speaking out about how the armed robbers attacked them.
The husband arrived home in Somerset West at about 9.30pm on Saturday after attending a youth function at his church. His wife was indoors.
“I parked my car in the garage and with the garage door still open I went to the boot to get my guitar out. These three guys stormed in, pointed a gun at me and said: ‘Go inside the house.’ There was nothing I could do.They forced me inside, closed the garage door, and asked me if I had any weapons. I don’t and said no.
“They asked who else was at home, but by that time my wife had realised something was wrong. By the time she opened the door the guy was standing there with a gun in her face.
“They ordered us to kneel down and one guy stood over us while the others ransacked the house.”
The gang took around half an hour to search their house.
“You have a gun in your face - you don’t know what they’re going to do. I had my wife with me - as a man you feel completely helpless. I was just praying they would not do anything to us - especially to my wife.
“But then, as quickly as they had arrived, they left. They asked me for my car keys, loaded TVs, laptops, cellphones, cameras, jewellery into my car, closed the garage door behind them and disappeared into the night. We are very relieved to be alive.”
The man said he had lost all his work, on his computer, but this meant little compared with their gratitude they were not harmed.
“It’s been a real wake-up call. We are careful with security. I literally had just walked out of my car to my boot - with the garage open - and that was enough. We are now paranoid.”
The couple now wear panic buttons around their necks on lanyards.
“I’ve gone through all the emotions. One minute you want to cry, the next you want to kill everyone. We believe God has protected us - my wife was praying so much they eventually told her to ‘shut up’. But it has also changed our lives.”
Police spokesman FC van Wyk said the three men had fled the scene in a White Hyundai Sonatra.
No arrests had yet been made.
