The Helderberg's First Astronomy Station

Sketch by C. Piazzi Smyth, 1842. Courtesy of Africana Museum, Johannesburg.

The astronomy observation station on Sneeukop, set up on top of Hottentot Holland Mountain Range by Charles Piazzi Smyth in 1842. Note the tent protecting transit instruments and the ones on the left that must have accommodated the team. In those day the stars must have been an dazzling display with clear skies and no electricity to dim the night's sky.
