Unusual Sculpture Made From 1000kg of Recycled Material

With my interest in sculpture I came across this sculpture made out of hundreds of recycled tins, kitchen utensils, pots and pans.  This unusual sculpture was created by Sudobh Gupta in 2006. It is now on display at the Frieze Art Fair in Regent’s Park, London.

Pottery and Sculpture Classes are conducted by Liam Vogel in Somerset West. Classes are held during the evenings and in the mornings in a very relaxed atmosphere. He offers classes from beginners to advanced lessons in pottery, sculpture, ceramics and mould making.

You could even learn how to make a living out of clay. Lessons are only R290,00 per month and all material is provided (each lesson is about 2-3 hours). I found the lessons to be very therapeutic and always look forward to the next lesson.

Cape Town Artists invited to send Artwork for Station Walls

Local artists invited to submit their designs for MyCiTi station walls

The City of Cape Town invites local artists to submit their designs for artworks on the walls of the newest MyCiTi bus stations which are about to be completed.

The first MyCiTi bus stations at the Civic Centre, Cape Town Stadium and Cape Town International Airport have all been adorned with artworks which make them attractive public spaces. The new, smaller stations are currently being completed for the rollout of the service to the West Coast, along the Atlantis corridor, and there is an opportunity to incorporate artworks in the design of the entrance areas.

“The artworks should identify the MyCiTi bus stations along the West Coast route and take inspiration from the unique locations as well as the historical and geographic context of the area,” said the City’s Media Manager, Kylie Hatton.

The artworks will have a lifespan of about four to five years, after which they may be replaced with new works. The City will consider commissions for the following IRT stations:

· Woodstock (on new bus-way, just west of Church Street)
· Paarden Eiland (on new bus-way, north of intersection with Paarden Eiland Road)
· Neptune (on new bus-way, just south of intersection with Neptune Street)
· Section (on new bus-way, just north of intersection with Section Street)
· Vrystaat (on new bus-way, north of intersection with Vrystaat Road)
· Zoarvlei (on new bus-way, near Milner Street intersection with R27) REV 1
· Lagoon Beach (on R27, about 70 metres south of Boundary Road)
· Woodbridge (on R27, about 70 metres south of Loxton Road)
· Milnerton (on R27, about 40 metres north of Broad Road)
· Racecourse (on R27, just north of Racecourse Road)
· Sunset Beach (on R27, just north of Ocean Way)
· Bayside (on Blaauwberg Road, between intersections with R27 and Raats/Pentz Drives)
· Granger Bay (on Granger Bay Boulevard, near access to Fort Wynyard)

The deadline for the first round of submissions is 13:00 on 19 October 2010.

Body Casting

A friend of ours is pregnant and I do casting as hobby, mainly small casts. So, I offered to cast her as a memoir of her pregnancy. Needless to say, I was quite nervous as I have never done a human body cast...lol! But I was very proud of the result and she has decided to mount the cast in a frame in the baby room.

Materials Needed:

Plaster of Paris

Bandages

Sand Paper

Spray Paint

Ribbon

Method:

1. Prepare "subject" with lots of Vaseline to avoid rash and etc

2. Place towl or mat under the "subject"

3. Make "subject" comfortable in a semi sitting up position by pillows as support

Plaster Mix:

1. Get a large bowl and fill to halfway mark with warm water

2. Empty bags of plaster into water until the plaster forms peaks (do not stir)

3. Cut bandages into small strips

4. Stir mixture until smooth (you should do this only once ready)

5. Dip bandages into plaster mix and place over body in a V shape around breast area

6. Place around two layers of bandages for strength

7. Smooth off with a layer of plaster with your hands

8. Allow to dry, depending on weather conditions about 20 minutes. The plaster is warm until set when it will become cold.

9. Remove cast carefully

10. Allow to dry for about two days

11. Once dry apply thin layer of plaster to smooth edges and other defects

12. Allow to dry for a day

13. Smooth with sandpaper carefully you do not expose bandages

14. Spray paint

15. Drill hole on top of each breast area and feed through ribbon to hang cast.

Freedom Fibre Artist

I am a Freeform Fibre Artist living in Somerset West and a member of the International and South African Freeform FibreArt Guild. I also teach Arts and Crafts from home. For the past two years I have been the only South African who has had my Freeform Piece published in the INTFF yearly book. In 2008 the theme was 'Through our eyes' and last year 2009 the theme was 'Four Seasons'. I have included photos of my pieces and the poem that I wrote for the 2008 book for the theme 'Through our eyes'.

Art in the Park

Takes place once a month at Southery's Vines, Main Road in Somerset West.

This is a really great art event that shows off the great works and tallents of local Helderberg Basin artisits. It is really enjoyable and a very relaxing way of getting to know the artist. You can also negoitiate directly with the artist on buying a piece you may like.

The quality of Art in Somerset West is very high. I was amazed to see the quality of art produced in the Helderberg Basin.

Art in the Park is on the last Sunday of every month from 10a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
