Nestled high in the most picturesque valley and protected from the Cape's howling winds, the Jonkershoek flyfishery offer superb flyfishing for both the experienced and the novice angler. The flyfishery operates from the oldest trout hatchery in Southern Africa, started in 1892.
Six trout dams are available on the border of the Jonkershoek Nature reserve. The dams are well stocked with rainbow trout as well as the elusive and sought after Cape Whitefish (Barbus andrewi) one of South Africa’s famous yellowfish species, renowned for their fighting abilities. The best fishing in the dams is over winter, when the trout are performing at their peak, though the Summer offers anglers an excellent opportunity to sight fish for the Cape Whitefish.
A beautiful section of the Eerste River is also available where one can target wild rainbow trout. The best fishing time on the river is during summer, out of spawning season. Booking for the river is essential.
Equipment can be hired from reception. Our staff offer advice and tuition on request. Fly casting and fishing clinics are run on a regular basis and private tuition can also be arranged.
The amenities on the premises include a restaurant area, picnic areas and bathrooms.

Crayfishing Season 2009/10 Around the Corner:

Time to get the boats and gear ready to go cray fishing this summer,crayfish season opens on the 15 November 2009 and closes on the 30th April 2010. Crayfish are only allowed to be captured on weekends and public holidays during daylight hours. Permits allow 4 crayfish to be caught by each permit holder per day.

Yellow Fin Tuna Arrive off Cape Point

The first yellow fin tuna were caught 30 - 40 miles off Cape Point this week. Fishing for tuna off Cape Point is amazing, yellow fin tuna caught from Cape Point range from 45kg to 90kg. Get onto a charter for an experience you will never forget. Charters leave from Gordon's Bay Harbour in front of the Gordon's Bay Boat Angling Club at Harbour Island. You can also make enquiries at any of the tackle shops in Gordon's Bay or Strand.

DSTV - Blackfin Angling Team visits The Strand

The Blackfin Angling Team recently visited false bay where they fished from Shark Rock in the Strand. Here is Rob Kyle who caught this shark for fun on a hand line. Blackfin can be watched on DSTV on channel 456 on Sundays at 13:30 pm.

Fishing

The Helderberg coast line has many good fishing spots for rock and surf as well as deep sea anglers.

Rock and Surf anglers are productive mainly at night along the Strand Beach as fishing is not allowed during the day. Anglers target Kob, White Steenbas, Sharks, Zebra and in season Shad (Elf) during the evenings.

Heading towards Koelbay along the rocks you will spot many anglers targeting Galoen in season and other species that are active during the day.

Boaters are spoilt and can head out behind the surf and to the reefs spread out over false bay. Boat anglers catch a wide variety of fish and mainly target Geelbek, Kob, Yellow Tail and Snoek in season.

Deep Sea Anglers, head out from Gordon's Bay to around 40 miles from Cape Point where they target Yellow Fin Tuna, Long Fin Tuna and there has been a few Black Marlin hooked while targeting tuna.

There are many tackle shops in the basin where you will find all sorts of information about the local spots, charters and etc.
