Art Lessons in The Helderberg

Stage Coach Opens in Somerset West

Hello Stephen

I first wrote to you/Helderberg Basin News about two years ago, when planning my
move to Somerset West, as a South African returnee. Now that we have settled our
family (since September), I want to draw your, and the Helderberg's attention to
a wonderful new venture in Somerset West. We have brought Stagecoach to town.

This is the first time that Africa hosts a branch of the international network
of part-time theatre arts schools exclusively for children 4-18. In a very
short time we are already receiving enthusiastic responses from families in the
area.

Stagecoach runs on a Saturday morning during school term times, from 9.30 until
12.30. Children from 7-18 years old participate in an hour of singing, and hour
of dance and an hour of drama under careful guidance of professional teachers.
Class sizes are small and the emphasis is on developing skills that will boost
confidence, and will improve poise and presentation. There are no auditions, as
the classes are as much for the shy beginner as for the budding star. They are
also for children who want to try something different during the Autumn term.
Our teaching is inclusive, and our teachers have been carefully screened for
their experience, discipline and sense of fun. Over 40 000 children around the
world bounce out of their Stagecoach classes every week. They make lasting
friendships and learn skills that last a lifetime.

Our Early Stages classes are for 4-7 year olds, where they are introduced to the
basics of theatre arts skills over ninety minutes. In effect, they sample three
half-hours of Stagecoach fun from 9 until 10.30 on Saturday mornings.

It's worth having a look at our website www.stagecoachschools.co.za where you
can read about our ethos, and our team. Better still, come to our Open Day on
Saturday 9 April at 10am, at the Church of Christ, corner of Lourensford Road
and Irene Avenue in Somerset West. The clips on Facebook and YouTube give a
good indication of how Stagecoach classes are run. See Stagecoach TV at
http://youtube.com/user/StagecoachTV and also Stagecoach Theatre Arts -
worldwide on Facebook.

This is such an exciting venture for all children in the Helderberg region. I
want them to know that we are here. Stagecoach Somerset West has come to town.

I'd be happy to address any queries about Stagecoach either via email at this
address (somersetwest@stagecoachschools.co.za) or call me on 07413 79674.

Kind regards
Melanie Williss

Strawberries in the Helderberg Basin

Strawberries at Helderberg Farm (Plaas)

Strawberries, like vineyards are one of the cornerstones of the Helderberg Basin. For many years residents and visitors to the Helderberg Basin have enjoyed the delicious freshly picked strawberries from one of the many strawberry farms in The Helderbeg or Stellenbosch.

Strawberries were in fact so popular and loved by the residents of the Helderberg Basin that they created a festival in their honour called "The Strawberry Lights Festival".

In December each year Somerset West hosts the festival, where stalls used to sell strawberries and cream to the many visitors that came from near and far, to see the festive lights while they ate strawberries and cream, walking up and down the Main Road of Somerset West.

Today, unfortunately this tradition has been replaced and instead traders sell all sorts of mainly Chinese novelties instead. The Christmas lights are the only remaining tradition of The Strawberry Lights Festival.

Strawberry picking season is from September - December on many of the great farms where the kids love to go pick strawberries along the R44 on the way to Stellenboch.
