W.Cape firefighters continue to battle Kleinmond blaze
Western Cape fire officials on Thursday said that they have brought one vegetation fire in the Overstrand area under control, but are still battling the one at Kleinmond.
Officials have been using helicopters to water bomb the flames.
Fire chief Riaan Jakobs said he is confident they will be able to douse the flames above Kleinmond soon.
“We have five teams and the helicopter is fighting the fire lines. At this stage no houses are threatened and it’s only one or two flare-ups, but that we contained with our teams. At this stage it does looks good, but not under control…” he said.
The smoke was also affecting visibility in the Helderberg region.
Cape Town fire services’ Mark Bosch said, “The smoke that people are seeing [in Gordon’s Bay and Strand] is coming from a fire in Kleinmond."
"It’s blowing over the mountain into the basin and it’s affecting them, making it look as if there’s a very large fire in the basin itself,” he said.
