The Metro Police Dog Unit foiled the plans of a suspected poacher when they caught him with perlemoen worth R100 000 in Somerset West yesterday.
Yolanda Faro, deputy chief of the Metro police, said officers had been conducting routine patrols in the area when they received a tip-off about a vehicle transporting perlemoen.
“The officers found the vehicle heading towards Somerset West on the R44. The unshelled perlemoen was found in six black bags in the boot of the vehicle,” she said.
The 33-year-old suspect was arrested and taken to the Somerset West police station and 233 perlemoen were confiscated.
